PSHE

Intent

At Rattlesden School, we work hard to help our pupils build the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We help children to understand and value how they and others fit into and contribute to the world. We have a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health through the delivery of a programme of engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole school approach.

Implementation

PSHE at our school is implemented using the KAPOW scheme, which is a whole school approach, that consists of three areas of learning for EYFS (to match the EYFS personal, social and emotional development prime areas) and five areas of learning across Key Stages 1 and 2. These are:

EYFS
Self-regulation
Building relationships
Managing self

Key stage 1 and 2
Families and relationships
Health and wellbeing
Safety and the changing body
Citizenship
Economic wellbeing

Each area is revisited each year to allow children to build on their prior learning, hence providing a progressive programme.
All lessons are based on the statutory requirements of RSE and also refer to the PSHE Association Programme of Study, which is recommended by the DfE.

Impact

The impact of following this programme is that the standards of attainment across the school will meet or exceed that which is expected. Kapow’s scheme provides assessment guidance for teachers along with opportunities for self and peer assessment, which is vital within PSHE. Knowledge organisers will be used for each topic, to see what children already know and therefore aid planning, whilst revisiting at the end of a topic to demonstrate progression in their learning. Once taught the full scheme, children will have met the objectives set out within the RSE statutory guidance and can utilise their learning within their daily lives, from dealing with friendship issues to resilience to making healthy choices and knowing where and how to get help when needed.

Priorities for PSHE
  1. Introduce new scheme Kapow and monitor effectiveness (book look/pupil voice/teacher feedback)
  2. Respond as required to Government's RSE review, check school documents and coverage of RSE
  3. Monitor assessment of PSHE - evidence of pre/post assessment

PSHE in Willow Class
On World Ocean Day we learnt about pollution.  The children had to try and clear up their own mini ocean after an oil spillage.  It was very difficult! We then looked at the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean and thought about ways we contribute to this and how we could reduce our waste.
PSHE in Year 5 and 6
In the Autumn term, Claire and Chloe from West Suffolk Hive worked with children in Cedar and Beech class to learn about and discuss puberty and wellbeing.

Reasons we have to be happy... a poignant piece of work during the pandemic with fellow classmates off school unwell.

This display celebrates all we do when we're not in school, including clubs, community work, awards and achievements.

Every year we donate to the Stowmarket foodbank

We tackle global issues. Here the children talked about sustainability and why fish farming is a concern.

We value the traditions of our school, such as supporting the British Legion poppy appeal. We have decorated the church with poppies, attended memorial services for village members at the Chapel, and welcome speakers to the school to talk about remembrance.
