PSHE

Intent

At Rattlesden, our PSHE curriculum supports children to become confident, resilient and active members of society. We help pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to face new experiences, challenges and unfamiliar situations. Through learning about themselves and others, children are encouraged to value diversity, make positive choices and look after their mental health and wellbeing.
PSHE covers important areas such as health, safety, relationships and financial awareness, helping children stay safe and prepared for life now and in the future. This learning underpins the wider curriculum and supports children to succeed both in school and beyond.

Implementation

PSHE at Rattlesden is taught using the Kapow scheme, which provides a whole-school, progressive approach. In EYFS, learning focuses on self-regulation, building relationships and managing self. In Key Stages 1 and 2, children learn about families and relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and the changing body, citizenship and economic wellbeing. Year 6 also explore identity.
Lessons are based on statutory RSE requirements and follow the PSHE Association Programme of Study recommended by the DfE. Each area of learning is revisited yearly so children can build on prior knowledge and deepen their understanding.
PSHE lessons often involve discussion, stories, scenarios, video clips and role play, allowing children to explore real-life and current issues in a safe and structured way. Children are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and reflect on their learning, including through anonymous question boxes where appropriate.
Assessment takes place through Kapow pre- and post-unit assessments, alongside pupil surveys and ongoing teacher observations, ensuring children are secure in their understanding. Learning is recorded in a class scrapbook rather than individual books, capturing lesson content and pupil voice.
Support and challenge are built in for all learners. SEND pupils are supported through strategies such as alternative recording, sentence starters and mixed-ability groupings, while Kapow also provides opportunities to extend and challenge more confident learners.

Impact

PSHE in Willow Class
On World Ocean Day we learnt about pollution.  The children had to try and clear up their own mini ocean after an oil spillage.  It was very difficult! We then looked at the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean and thought about ways we contribute to this and how we could reduce our waste.
PSHE in Year 5 and 6
In the Autumn term, Claire and Chloe from West Suffolk Hive worked with children in Cedar and Beech class to learn about and discuss puberty and wellbeing.

Reasons we have to be happy... a poignant piece of work during the pandemic with fellow classmates off school unwell.

This display celebrates all we do when we're not in school, including clubs, community work, awards and achievements.

Every year we donate to the Stowmarket foodbank

We tackle global issues. Here the children talked about sustainability and why fish farming is a concern.

We value the traditions of our school, such as supporting the British Legion poppy appeal. We have decorated the church with poppies, attended memorial services for village members at the Chapel, and welcome speakers to the school to talk about remembrance.
