Willow Class

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Year 1

Willow Class are Reception children and Year One children. The teachers are Miss Mills and Mrs Raison (HLTA). They are supported by Mrs Preston.

Learning in Willow Class is led by our children in a play-based environment through observation and investigation linked to topics such as Animals, Dinosaurs and Explorers. Children have daily Phonic sessions using Letters and Sounds to give them a good foundation for reading and writing. Our morning sessions have an English or Maths focus linked to the Early Years and National Curriculum. In the afternoon sessions we look at the foundation subjects such as Science, Geography & History (Understanding of the World), Computing (Technology), Art & Design, Music, Design & Technology (Expressive Art & Design), PE, RE,  The children learn independently, in a group, alongside their peers  or with a grown up. They have access to a selection of areas both inside and outside the classroom; creative, construction, writing, technology, role play, reading, small world, messy play, to name just a few. We encourage all the children to access al areas. Though we don’t teach modern foreign language lessons we do learn songs and common words in different languages.

We value our relationships with parents and share our learning journey with parents via an online system called Tapestry. We download photos and observations from school and parents can do the same at home. On Friday mornings we invite all parents in to stay and read with the children some older children from Cedar Class also join us.  This is a relaxed start to the day and helps us develop our reading skills as well as a love of literature.   Reception children are sent home with a book of ‘Sounds’ to practise at home.  Year 1 children have weekly spellings with a test on Friday.
We love visitors coming to Willow Class and Rattlesden Playgroup come to play once a half term to help with transition to big school.

Tapestry

As well as a guided learning journal book in school, we have an online learning journal called 'tapestry'. Teachers AND PARENTS can add their observations to this electronically and like it with EYFS development matters.
