English
We teach English mostly through our topics. Our English lessons are taught each morning and we use a variety of different approaches to teach the many different aspects that the National Curriculum covers.  Our daily Guided Reading sessions focus on our reading and comprehension skills. We also have a weekly handwriting session.

Phonics
Children have daily Phonic sessions to give them a good foundation for reading and writing. We follow the scheme Supersonic Phonics Friends. This programme is a systematic, synthetic approach which uses Phonic friends to support children’s confidence when applying skills to reading and writing. This scheme also covers spelling rules, which ensures a clear progression from reading phonetically to identifying patterns in spelling. Please head over to our Phonics page under 'subjects' for more details.

Maths
Our daily morning maths sessions are focused on learning and applying new skills. We follow the whole school approach of mastery to ensure fluency, along with developing reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Science
Much use is made of our wonderful outdoors environment; whether in the school grounds or out in the local village.  We also take exciting trips to places such as Lackford Lakes where experts support the children to develop skills in observation, investigation and experimentation. Seasonal change and plants is woven into our learning throughout the year to ensure it is relevant. "Mulberry" our seasonal change bear likes to go home for sleepovers, where he hopes the children will show him things growing in their homes and gardens. BUT... they must remember to put him to bed when it is getting dark!

Foundation subjects
In the afternoons, we teach the foundation subjects (Geography, History, Computing, Art & Design, Design & Technology, Music, PE and RE)

In Computing, all the children have their own logins and confidently use ICT as a tool to support other areas of the curriculum.  We use a variety of programmes which engage and stimulate the children's creativity.

Over the Ocean

This Summer term, our topic is Over the Ocean! We'll be diving into seaside adventures, learning about the brave Grace Darling and exploring what makes coastal places special. We'll look at both natural and human features of the coast, create beautiful seaside-inspired art in the style of Andy Goldsworthy, and even design our own pirate bandanas!

What have we been up to in Maple Class?
